Problem to restart my file after reinstallation

Hello, I reformatted my system, reinstalled my version of AGS (3.5.0), but my AGS files no longer work. For the next project, I switched to version 6. It seems to work pretty much, a few small problems. But for my old project, it's annoying not to be able to restart it in its basic version.

Unable to read the user preference file. You may lose some of your Preferences settings and may not be able to access source control.

The error was: This game's user data file is from version 3.5.1.17 of AGS or an unsupported beta version. Please check the AGS website for a newer version of the editor.

 Anybody got any ideas?

Overall I would recommend to before doing anything to make a copy of your project folder and if possible a backup too.

It sounds though that at some point you just opened your project with AGS 3.5.1.

If that is the case, there should be a Game.agf.user file in the directory and maybe a few other ".user" files there, they could be removed.

If you absolutely didn't, my other guess would be that in your AppData/AGS in Windows there is a preference file written by AGS 3.5.1 there, so you could remove that or reinstall the 3.5.0 version you want - I don't remember if 3.5.0 and 3.5.1 attempt to use the same install dir or not.

Any reason to not use 3.5.1 or the most recent 3.6.0 version or the beta 3.6.1?

Also, I really recommend using some form of version control, this would help identifying which files changed when.

Hello, thank you for your answer.

I tested the User files, without result.

Indeed, it seems that the file would have been opened in version 3.5.1, version of AGS that I did not have...
I downloaded it tonight and it worked.

So for my new project, Gobliins6, I'm going to AGS 3.6.0. But for my finished project, Gobliiins5, I prefer to stay on the 5, if I make a version, you never know. Because using the file of my new game with AGS 3.6.0, I immediately had small problems with the text, the é was replaced by a ?... Weird... Apparently it got back on its own, but not in the character names, I have to check everything. Thank you PG

Holy, you are the Gobliins developer! That's amazing!  8-0

OK, so it's a RELEASED project! I guess version is more sensitive then because of save files of the players.

I am trying to think how the 3.5.1.17 version number would appear in the error message if it's not read directly from the version of the file but I am coming empty. If you didn't had that version installed at any point, the only other thing I can come up now would be sharing the game project files with someone that had that version. I checked the AGS Editor source code and this error message indeed ???  is in LoadUserDataFile and it's called to load the Game.agf.user file only.

What does this means? My understanding is if you remove Game.agf.user file at minimum the new error message must be a different one.  ???

I checked the game ("Gobliiins5-Part1"), and it's built in 3.5.1.17. So it definitely has to be opened in AGS 3.5.1, not 3.5.0.

The version of AGS used to build a game may be seen in setup program, for example:

I am trying to think here, does installing ags 3.5.0 with the installer and later installing 3.5.1, keeps the 3.5.0 name in the Windows start menu? I think we only made the installer use the three top numbers on the version number when naming the directory in AGS 3.6.0.

Just trying to figure it out where the confusion might be. The AGS version number may be checked by either looking into the about menu under the help in the Editor or I think also right clicking the acwin.exe or the AGS editor in the properties for the version you think it's 3.5.0 - maybe because the old installer did something wrong in naming the dir.

The program folder has 3 numbers since the beginning of AGS. It is the Editor's program link that was added version numbers since 3.6.0.
EDIT: ah, the installer appeared since 3.0 probably; but that's a non-important detail.

As Peegee said, he reformatted the system; if that means what I think it means then all programs were gone. Maybe he simply did not remember which version number to install exactly. But since the system is reset then, i guess, there's no way to find out the full story.
