I wasn't able to finish mine for the deadline yesterday. Sorry for asking for an extension :X. Please don't wait on my account! Perhaps my piece ends up qualifying for the next BB theme :).

lorenzo

ildu:, nothing to be sorry about! Sometimes we can finish before the deadline, but most of the time life gets in the way. ;) Hopefully we'll see something from you next time!

Hannah_Banana: do you think you'll be able to post an entry, or should I close the competition and go to voting? I don't want to keep it going for too long in case there are people who really love the BG blitz, but really hate the theme I chose. (laugh)

Hannah_Banana

Let's close it and start the vote! Agree, let's keep things moving.

Hopefully ildu and I can enter the next round!

Voting time!

Entries:

Creamy's sunny summertime scene!

newwaveburritos's extravagant EGA edifices!

Voting categories:

Concept: your background should tell us something about the place you have depicted.
Playability: does it have clearly defined walkable areas, things to interact with, etc?
Artistic Execution: does the image convey the wanted atmosphere? What's the feeling of the place?

Deadline: 18th of May.

Unfortunately, newwaveburrito's entry doesn't seem to load right now (just for me, or everyone else as well?), so I can't vote at the moment.

But I'll say that I love Creamy's scene. I so would like to sit on this bench right now and eat an ice cream. Not so sure about the statue, though. Something more romantc or neutral would fit a plaza like that better, not some random guy in a suit. Love the stairs to the side, gives the scene character, though I wouldn't want to have to go up there, they look a bit steep.

Well, I'll try to remember to come by later again and vote, hopefully with newwave's entry also visible.

Sinitrena

Yay, newwave's entry is back!

Not my favorite style and I can't really see this as a vacation spot (And I prefer city tours to a beach for my vacations). I do like the blue though and it does look nice in its own way.

Anyway, votes:

Concept: Creamy

Playability: Creamy

Artistic Execution: newwaveburrito

RootBound

Nice entries this month.

Concept: Creamy. I like both in their own ways, though I do think The boarded-up door and atmosphere of grittiness make the cityscape a bit less inviting as a vacation spot. All a matter of opinion, obviously.

Playability: Creamy. This was difficult because I do think both rooms look very playable. I think newwaveburritos's feels more like a gateway to other locations, a good establishing-setting room, and Creamy's has the same qualities but also feels like important actions would happen right on this screen--more to interact with.

Artistic execution: newwaveburritos. Hard to beat that use of color and lighting to convey atmosphere.

J. They/them. Here are my most recent games:

Great holiday destination and environment to set a game in. Could see this help set an interesting scene in game!

Playability: newwaveburritos
Think yours is slightly more playable with places to explore in game, but tough choice.

Artistic execution: newwaveburritos
Love the style and colour palette you've used. Nice work!

First, I wanted to apologize for not finishing this one on time. As I feared, my last weeks have been hectic.

I obviously vote for newwaveburritos on each category.
His use of colors is always interesting.
Is this a mountain in the distance between the 2 buildings?

Concept: Creamy. Creamy's piece communicates the theme beautifully and I would very much like to go there on vacation (laugh)!

Playability: newwaveburritos. I think newwaveburritos' piece is simply more ready to be put into a game. Even though the walkable area is limited, I can see a bunch of potential activities going on.

Artistic execution: Creamy. This was a tough one! I often love newwaveburritos' dithered pixel stylings, but there is something really romantic about Creamy's piece. Albeit unfinished, the mediterranean vibe, colors, warmth and expressiveness pull me in. This is the sort of thing that makes me want to play adventure games (see Broken Sword, etc.).

Results!

This was really close, but the winner of this Background Blitz is... newwaveburritos!

Congratulations!  :cheesy:

Oh, wow, thanks everybody!  Great entry, Creamy!  I guess I better come up with a theme and post it!
