Hiking is a long, vigorous walk, usually on trails or footpaths in the countryside.

What is MAGS?
Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the guidelines set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules
Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualize your game following the month's criteria (see above). Second, create your game fuelled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

* A working download link
* The title of your game
* A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fourteen days, and the winner chooses the next month's theme.

Remember that this is a challenge to see what you can do in a month, so any tinkering you do after that, including fixing minor glitches, is against the spirit of the competition. The exception to this is that you may go in and fix major, game-breaking bugs only during voting. We want you to have a game that voters can actually play and that runs on their machines.

So to reiterate, during the voting period fixing major, game-breaking bugs is okay, fixing minor glitches or making cosmetic changes is cheating.

Tips
Here are some ways to make sure you have a game to submit at the end of the month:
* Make a tiny game. Plan small, then cut it in half. Find shortcuts (e.g. if making walkcycles is time-consuming, make the characters static or have it in the first person).
* Plan to have your game playable and submittable with a week to spare. This way you have a week to fix bugs, add some flourishes and maybe even get someone to test it.
* Plan to submit it a day or so early. This way, if there are any technical issues with uploading, they can be sorted out in time.

Hi! New here but I heard about MAGS from a youtube video. Can I enter with a team? Me and my friends thought it'd be fun C:

Welcome Coco. Absolutely, team entries are more than welcome. If you and your friends decide to enter, please pop in the thread occasionally with updates and screenshots

Welcome! Working in a team is fun and allowed (and comes with it's own challanges). Just keep in mind that the game has to be made with AGS.

Coco_the_Clown

Thank you for your support AGS people!

As requested, this is some of the progress my team has made so far. We're in the conceptual stages right now, so the work is in a bit of a state of flux. But we're getting closer and closer to where we want to be and the script should be finished soon. This weekend we plan to assess the capabilities of scripting in AGS and rescope our plans based on what we're capable of.

I'm not sure how to embed music, but we also have a little bit of that.

Hey there, I'm also new and also heard about MAGS and AGS from a video. Thought I'd give MAGS a try to learn the engine though I'm starting to think I might've bitten off more than I can chew without much gamedev experience. Nonetheless, I got the characters walking and animating and interacting with things, so I'm hoping I can push through to the end and maybe get a short game done by the deadline! Here's a little work in progress screenshot:

Good first screenshot and welcome to making games! I've worked with a lot of "make a game" engines in the past and can say that AGS is very intuitive and easy to pick up for making adventure games. Much more so than making your own engine in another language or IDE. Good luck on finishing and I look forward to playing your entry!

@MOCCA I like it! Really appealing style and atmosphere. Great pixel work.

And @Coco the Clown, I like the campfire too. Great lighting.

How are we getting on, gang?

Hmm, it seems @Coco the Clown has deleted their profile. And @MOCCA hasn't posted since their first and only post last week.

Is anyone else working on something?

As usual, I started late, but here's an upscaled screenshot of a background I made. Warning: Excessive use of dithering!

Yep, still working on it! Had a little bit of a life situation but I've been chipping away at things since. Been diligently learning the engine and finished some animations which I've never really done so it's been a learning progress too. I don't have enough experience to say if I will finish it all when deadline comes but I don't feel it's impossible as of right now! If I miss this one then I still feel like I learned enough and will just try again for the next MAGS since I'm having fun!

Here's some characters cycling through some animations to show some progress:

The script and progression is completely done, just working on assembling it all and adding some more art and maybe I'll have time to make some music too~

Stupot

That's great to hear @MOCCA . Those animations are very nice.

Wow, high quality graphics this month!

There is currently a bug in the AGS forum that you cannot view profiles of people with space in their user name.

Stupot

Ahhhh that explains why I also thought Tycho Magnetic Anomoly had deleted their profile

4KbShort

This is the last full day I have to work on my game so I just decided to finish it!

This time I made sure the page was publicly displayed and I downloaded the archive and tested it so hopefully no errors in that department.

Please have a go and enjoy!

Sadly have to drop out of it this time after all. I overestimated how much I could get done and learn in a short amount of time and other life circumstances make me unable to continue working on it for a while. That said, I will definitely stick with AGS and maybe even complete this game post-competition. I'll probably miss next month's MAGS but plan to enter the one after that! I think AGS is pretty neat from my short experience with it now and will continue using it for sure. See you soon with maybe a completed version of the game I was trying to make this time or something new~!

I did find time to play @4KbShort 's entry and quite enjoyed it!
Great atmosphere and graphics and the story was touching in its simplicity! Lovely little experience and great job finishing too!

Stupot

No worries MOCCA. Take your time and keep checking back

So, we ended up not being able to implement like.... 95% of the assets and content we made. We're planning on finishing the game next month and releasing the legitskies version somehow, but we wanted to submit something for the deadline. So here's a little tiny demo of our game, "3 Days to Pandora".
