Awesome, Thank you very much!

I am still working on drawing a smoking animation, at which point you'll be able to roll a joint and stuff.

Yeah you're right, making the main character clickable was kinda pointless, it was like that by default, but i have no use for it so i should disable it.

I'm glad you like it!

I've been making this little thing about losing my keys. It's currently one room and really just practice for a lot of the basics of AGS and some more advanced things.

There's a curled rug that keeps flipping up, (you can stick it down with something, that's the only "puzzle" so far), and a bunch of junk to interact with, and you basically look around for your keys until you find them.

Anyway, it's done enough to be playable at any rate and I thought I'd post it here. You can play it at: https://ophidic.itch.io/the-keys-knees

This looks really nice!

I managed to get it working, thank you for the response, I got a counter working as planned, I have no idea what I did but I guess just go with it for now. I was starting to freak out because I wasn't getting it lol.

I though I had whittled things down to be simple, but unfortunately not simple enough it seems. I gave up for now trying to do arrays, I could never do arrays, not in applesoft basic, not now.

After difficulties with other things I decided on a simple RNG on game start that defines a location of an item, just in checking a hot spot it will check the variable and if the 3rd location detects the variable is 3 it gives you the item and if says the other thing.

that should be defined as far as I'm aware as:

Code: ags
function game_start()
{
int RNG = (1, 4);
}

I think? I don't know if I'm doing that right, I've been talking to chat gpt and looking at the manual but I'm not gasping this somehow.

It INSISTS I can refer to RNG in a room function thing but it doesn't come up on the list of things that I can use. I keep getting errors about stuff not defined and I am not even really sure how to ask or continue to look for help on this since the documentation isn't helping me grasp this at all. I wish I knew the words for these things better.

Quote from: newwaveburritos on Sun 02/04/2023 23:02:13Maniac Mansion itself does a little flubbing with the vanishing points to get away with having more "usable area" so you can definitely fudge it.  It's just a matter of fudging the right things.  As an aside, I have a decent treasure trove of EGA adventure game art I've done for myself that is scaled to about the same size as your guy there, Jason, if you want some.  Obviously, I doubt it will be a perfect match but it's there if you want any.

That would be great to see, I find it helps to look at other art and watch similar art style playthroughs while drawing. Haha I was watching Zak McKracken EGA the other day ;D

Cool thanks for the suggestions, i gotta work up the nerve to attempt this, and I'll report back and when Ive got it working ill post the code to help future users.

I'm starting to make some puzzles and I want to do a combo lock like this one.

Unfortunately I'm still new at this and I'm not sure what the best way to approach it would be, I was looking at making a gui, but 'm not sure it would be good to learn GUIs at the same time as trying to code a game mechanic.

Perhaps maybe I make a room with a close up graphic of the lock, and objects for the numbers that go up on left click and down on right click?

Either way, I'm not totally sure how I would go about starting that. I could define the code in the room script if I made a dedicated room for such a puzzle right? Haha it feels like the deep end every time I try a new thing.

Quote from: Snarky on Sat 01/04/2023 18:57:43Given the perspective of the ceiling, I'd say we shouldn't be seeing the top of the cabinets at all. If anything, we should be seeing the underside. (Remember, if we see the top of a flat horizontal surface, that implies that our eyes/camera are above it.)

that's fair.

I'm not crossing my fingers for 100% realism in terms of angles and perspectives.
Some versions of the rooms in maniac mansion seem to have a few pixels worth of angles on the top of the frame while some seem to have the top just a straight line.

I'll keep working on it and see what it looks like a few different ways. Eventually I kinda wanna do stuff in the foreground a little more too... that table with the s&p shakers is the first instance of it so far.

I'm so used to working within the constraints of tilesets that drawing a room feels kinda like standing in an open field. :D

I tested out talking the top of the cabinet down a pixel on one side, two on the other, and I took the top of the microwave down by 1.

Yeah, that's a good suggestion tbh, I think it looks a bit better, but two pixels on the right cabinet might be a bit too much

Quote from: Babar on Fri 31/03/2023 10:07:28I don't think the perspective on the top of the cabinets and fridge and microwave are correct, makes it look like they're tilting downwards.

Either that, or the perspective on the top of the doorframes is wrong.

It might not be...i have been walking a line trying to not be a perfectionist to the point of detriment, that's a tough line to walk sometimes hahha

I have some cabinets with a foot or two of space an the top and you can put jink on them. Maybe shaving it doen a pixel might look better. :)

Kitchen comin' along. Set some object blocking for the fridge door.

Wait... maybe I don't need that bool thing. What's a bolean uhh thing again? I'm sure it's very important but I can't keep track.

Anyway, I managed to get things configured correctly without bool and maybe that's because AGS has been updated since this thread lol

weird, I'm using this:

function room_Load()
{
bool oFridge.Solid = true;
}

And it's telling me:

"room4.asc(13): Error (line 13): Expected ',' or ';', not '.'"

It's not a period, it's quite clearly a semi colon. I don't get the error.

Will you be able to open all of those cabinets?

Since this is in the Critics' Lounge, I assume you want some criticism. In which case, the walls look a little bland being entirely grey for every room. I know you're using the EGA palette, but even Maniac Mansion had more going on with the walls. With things such as wallpaper peeling off as well as a bit of illumination, and let's not forget wallpaper patterns.

But that's just a minor complaint. Overall it looks really good. Definitely top notch in my opinion.

If you're planning on releasing this game, maybe you should make a thread in the AGS Games in Production board. On the otherhand, I'd completely understand if this is all just for practice.  (nod)

Mostly just for practice, but i do plan on actually finishing it and making it playable.

So far everything is one file in aesprite, using the one basic room as a base, and having doors/stairs in place, sorta... I will absolutely be making the walls more detailed a bit further in.

Thanks for commenting! This has been pretty fun to do.

I did a dark tower reference, and drew up a kitchen just now.

yoooooooo I think I got the hang of makin' little drawers and things.

later on I would really like to make a drag an drop searching scene for drawers, Exactly like the bargain software bin in Space Quest 4.

I do dither sometimes but i don't wanna overuse it and then be bound to dithers all over just yet haha.

I actually have a video of me tracing over a screenshot of the old back to the future 80s cartoon.

Really like how some of the backgrounds look in the older cartoons so i thought id give it a go and record it while i did so.

Yeah it was a bit of both. :D

I did start using the orange for skin tone a while after this, I just made a new thread where i made a maniac mansion style sprite of myself and drew a room and a few assets to go in it. It looks much better :)

Quote from: Danvzare on Mon 13/03/2023 19:27:26Very nice.  :-D
Did you trace over the images or did you eyeball it?
To me, it looks like a little bit of both.

Whatever the case, it looks very nice. I especially like your use of differing.
I'm not sure about the use of magenta for the skin colour for The Son of Man. You can usually get a pretty decent colour if you use orange and yellow. But that's just my opinion.

Speaking of The Son of Man. I know it's a famous painting, but every time I see it, I can't help but think that the artist couldn't be bothered to draw a face, so he just drew an apple over it and called it art.  (laugh)

Critics' Lounge / Dude Where's my Keys?

Just the start of a little practice game where I misplace my keys, and search around the house for them.

I drew everything here except the font and GUI, and I managed to make a functioning drawer after a little bit of fighting with the baseline.

Also my first time using overlays and animated backgrounds, so that was fun.

My walk cycle is janky, yeah, but I was looking at the NES MM sprites for reference and they seem to only have 3 frames per direction.
