The Rumpus Room / Re: What grinds my gears!

It grinds my gears when people dislike raisins.

I once played a demo of a point and click adventure game where you play as an anthropomorphic monkey dude trying to save his pig friend from some rhinos who had him roasting over a fire (wait, aren't they herbivores?). If you got too close they'd throw a grenade at you. The only other thing I remember is that there was like an old witch's hut or something with a giant mortar and pestle and if you tried to combine the wrong ingredients there'd be a little skull and crossbones smoke cloud or something and you'd just die.

I can't find anything about this game anywhere! And was this based on Journey to the West?

Please help me...

You might consider asking some pixel artists. I mean there are lots here already so some might come along and answer your question, but I'd imagine someone over at Pixelation would have a really solid answer for you too.

According to Ocarina Forest, the formula for frequency when blowing into an ocarina is this:

f = (speed of sound/(2*pi))*(sqrt(open area on surface of ocarina)/sqrt(volume of inner chamber * length of air column))

We can treat everything but the open area (A) as a constant (we'll call it B), so we get:

f = B * sqrt(A)

If we say A0 is the area when all finger holes are covered, we get:

Do = B * sqrt(A0)

and higher pitches can be represented as:

pitch(x) = B * sqrt(A0 + x)

so...

Re = B * sqrt(A0 + xRe)
Mi = B * sqrt(A0 + xMi)
Fa = B * sqrt(A0 + xFa)
Fi = B * sqrt(A0 + xFi)

Now, in equal temperament,

Re = Do*(2^(1/6))
Mi = Do*(2^(1/3))
Fa = Do*(2^(5/12))
Fi = Do*(2^(1/2))

so...

B * sqrt(A0 + xRe) = B * sqrt(A0) * (2^(1/6))
B * sqrt(A0 + xMi) = B * sqrt(A0) * (2^(1/3))
B * sqrt(A0 + xFa) = B * sqrt(A0) * (2^(5/12))
B * sqrt(A0 + xFi) = B * sqrt(A0) * (2^(1/2))

Doing some algebra, we get...

xRe = (2^(1/3) - 1) * A0 ~= 0.259921 * A0
xMi = (2^(2/3) - 1) * A0 ~= 0.587401 * A0
xFa = (2^(5/6) - 1) * A0 ~= 0.781797 * A0
xFi = A0 (interesting... you have to double the open area to get a pitch a tritone higher)

Now, simultaneously opening the two holes used for Re and Mi increases the area by (xRe + xMi).

xRe + xMi = (0.259921 * A0) + (0.587401 * A0) = 0.847322 * A0

0.847322 * A0 is closer to xFa than to xFi, so while your Fa might sound a bit sharp, it should register as Fa rather than Fi. This is especially true since the mapping of frequency to pitch is exponential rather than linear, so even halfway between xFa and xFi would register closer to Fa than Fi.

In summary: Change in pitch as a function of open surface area is a square root function. Mapping of frequency to perceived change in pitch is exponential. Both mathematical quirks combine in such a way that the sum of the additional areas needed to produce Re (2 semitones) and Mi (4 semitones) only amount to a little over Fa (5 semitones) rather than Fi (6 semitones).

I will once again push the Bunker.
...
It's an exquisite game, but it's old too; take it not as a proposal, but just as a "filler", in case nobody comes up with anything.

Thanks, bicilotti! Since noone else posted a teaser, this is now the pick of the month.

*dance, dance, dance*

This makes me happy. :)

I agree. I think it's a good idea, and I second the music category.

It was my birthday, too. I died today because my birthday was not acknowledged. :'(

I recently became a pirate...

But then I decided it wasn't for me after all...

P.S. I named the parrot Hermocrates.

Recently, I visited the Salton Sea...

Did I see any ghosts? You bet I did...

You realise TMI stood for the musical instrument, right? Ok just checking. It's hardly an abbreviation I myself am familiar with.

Oh! I understood it to mean "too much information" and was thus very confused! D'oh! Yes, of course, the musical instrument.

Obligatory guitar photo:

In that second picture you look a LOT like someone I went to high school with.

By the way, I want to try learning trumpet again. I think I'd be amazing at it now.

Here's a picture of me receiving my most recent birthday present. The date on this picture is very, very wrong.

No, I posted a different pic from the same day. In the one I posted before, I was playing a man pretending to be a chair. And I did a really, really, really good job of it, too. ;D

I just felt like posting a picture, and I don't have any new ones. Wait... Scratch that... Once I get home, I'll post some pictures from my graduation. :)

EDIT:

So at the end of May I graduated from a fairly small school called the University of Redlands. I am now a proud Bachelor of Music in Composition. ;D So there's my class. I'm the guy looking at the camera near the guy kneeling down on the grass because they forgot to give him a chair. Man, you'd think the University Administration would be able to plan a little better than that. Oh well. I guess the folks in the Admin building aren't exactly super geniuses. More like... DMV rejects or something.

So there's me walking across the stage. I'm a little small in this picture, but it's the best one of me on stage that I had on my computer. I've got better ones, but I'm too lazy to walk across the room to use the scanner. :P

That's better. Now you can see all that hair and my pink tassel. PINK! They give pink tassels to music majors. What's that about? If it has to be pinkish, at least make it something cool like... A125FF.

Yes, Super Mario did graduate with my class. He finally decided to go get that plumbing degree he'd been pretending to have all those years.

Here's a picture of my girlfriend and me. Four years of studying and practice and rehearsals and late night drives to Del Taco, and all for a hug. It was worth it. ;D

Sweet, Erenan! Did you buy the Stick from Emmett Chapman, and is that how you had the opportunity to get a quick lesson?

My dad bought me the stick as a graduation gift, and picking it up in person from Stick Enterprises was part of the gift. I'd actually met Emmett once before at a seminar, but this was different because he was giving me personal attention. :) He also signed it on the back of the headstock. ;D

For fun, here's another picture of me with my girlfriend: (This picture is three years outdated. I no longer have quite that much hair. :'()

Did he cut off his own shins with that axe?! :o

Here's a picture of me getting a brief Chapman Stick lesson with Emmett Chapman while I was picking up my brand new instrument:

I guess it's been long enough since I posted a picture of myself. ;D

Here's me playing that dating game from Whose Line is it Anyway...

In this pic, I am a man who believes that he is a chair. The others were someone with a three second attention span and some kind of mental patient.

I'm still extremely new here, but I guess I'll just post my pic anyway. 8)
