Thank you and reciprocal Happy Birthday to my birthday brothers.

Great stuff, my module is getting pretty old. I've put a link to this one on the first post.

For background speech you would have to do this anyway, since playing a speech clip is always blocking. So I'm not quite sure I follow what Ali is doing.

I can't believe I hadn't noticed that SayBackground doesn't allow audio! In that case there's all the more reason to want to call a particular speech clip from script. I only have a handful though, so I'll just workaround.

Just bumping this, because I want to know the same thing - for background speech using a speech bubble module.

I got a couple of free steam keys for (non-adventure) games I don't fancy at EGX Rezzed last week. If you are interested:

A flash animation question from someone more used to After Effects: I'm using the motion editor in CS5.5 and I want to adjust the keyframe type (smooth/corner) for the X property of a symbol but not the Y or Z property.

I can't seem to do it. They are linked and I can't find an option to unlink them. Surely it's possible?

I've found free software to cover almost everything I want to do with my PC, but I can't find a decent free video editor. There seems to be a few programs for Linux and Mac but not many for Windows. Those that do run on Windows are either unfinished, unstable, low on features or don't support many file formats.

I'd like to be able to have multiple video and audio streams, mask video, speed up/slow down video and audio, and obviously cut video and audio up and move it around. All while being able to preview in realtime. So, you know, not much.

Does anyone know any free software that runs on Windows that would do all that? Or failing that, anything out there that's cheap that people would recommend?

I think Lightworks is one to watch: http://www.lwks.com/

It's been around for years, but the open source version is still in the early stages. I haven't tried the latest release, however the last version suffered from a bad case of 'Unique Working Method'. If you've used Avid you will be OK, if you've used Premier or Final Cut (or any normal computer programs) it will take some getting used to. Blender had the same problem when I started using it, but has become much more accessible, so I hope Lightworks will achieve something similar in time.

Thanks Anian. I definitely can't just use a "regular animated texture" (I need the reflections of other objects in the scene to follow the wave geometry), but the videos you link, and other YouTube examples of Blender with and without Ocean Modifier, look promising.

Not having watched the full tutorial yet, I take it there's a relatively straightforward way to create a looping animation using this technique? Googling the question didn't bring up any definite "Yes, here's how you do it and it works fine" answers.

In the case of that tutorial there is. You set the displacing texture to be controlled by an object, then rotate the object causing the displacement to ripple in a cyclical fashion.

It is much easier to create an ocean effect in newer versions of Blender because of the built-in ocean modifier. Those tutorials are pretty old. However looping doesn't seem possible with the new modifier, unfortunately.

In case you're not used to Blender, here's a quick example: http://ali.agser.me/seademo.blend
The built-in sim is on the right, and the loopable version is on the left. When you see them move, it's clear that the left requires a lot of tweaking to get a good effect.

EDIT: I mean the cogfilms tutorial is pretty old but loopable. I didn't see Anian's youtube links.

Hey, why don't you watch My friend Arron's Impressions Video?

There is no reason not to, unless you hate people who can pull exactly the face of Robert DeNiro.

Fair enough, sorry to go off topic. Bravo to RPS for plugging AGS!

Edit: No offence taken, Lewis!

You can Nelly Cootalot in your own time, it isn't getting any more derivative of Monkey Island.

Wait, it is? How is that possible...?

I think the RPS article was fair as regards 3D in AGS. Though there are a few 3D plugins for AGS, I don't think they amount to a toolkit for 3D adventure games (yet). Unless I'm mistaken, the only games using the 3D plugins are those designed to demo their features.

On the other hand, the absence of Nelly Cootalot from the second article is less forgivable...

Thanks Ali! I actually tried that before, but on black the text was kind of dark red. The reason was that it wasn't 100% black. It only works with 100% black. When you have like 28 of R, G and B; it behave differently...

If you need the black to be dark grey, you could always create the effect with 0,0,0 then put an levels adjustment layer on top to lift the blacks a bit.

So THAT was a case of rasterizing the text? This thread has blown my mind.
#38
Make the text cyan and set the blending mode to Difference.

Not exactly a video clip, but a micro-budget feature film made by friends of mine. Is a masked vigilante spoof which was in the Edinburgh Film festival official selection (2010) and played in a few cinemas around the UK.

Crimefighters on Youtube!

Actually, Icey raises a good point. The solutions I came up with for the code puzzle didn't work, and I solved it by accident.

Spoiler
Sorry, no solution in here... just my confusion. I didn't understand why the first number in the clue referred to the second lock. At first I thought the paper was upside down, but that didn't seem to be the solution. I've forgotten the numbers that worked, but I remember not understanding why they were correct.

But apart from that (and a couple objects called "New Inventory Item") it was a smooth ride!

Ali: I would love to make a game like this in 3D, with a real focus on jumping between platforms, such a thing could surely be magical to play as you jump around. Sadly I lack the ability to code 3d games and also the ability to do 3d graphics, so I'm pretty much the exact wrong person to make this game  :-\ Maybe I'll try for this one day when I am uber smart and talented and can do 3d things :D

Nonsense, it would be easy! Do it now!
