semi transparency is done with an alpha channel.. or rather an 8bit alpha channel.

you can think of an individual pixel as 3 numbers. 0-255 for red, blue and green.

Now add another number (again from 0 to 255) for 'alpha'. This determines the transparency.

GG *does* support alpha channels but i've no idea how they work in practice..

in photoshop or gimp though you can set the transparency of your brush/pen tool before you use it.

@Haddas, do you know to "how"? ::)

actually i think his original phrase makes sense.

if you consider "know" as in "i know kung fu"
and "to be" as the infinitive "being"

then it works.

Just now the forums were down for me. It soon picked up again, but I was just wondering whether there is a back-up plan if, for some reason, the forums went down permanently?

Go to lookout point and flash your torch into the sky 3 times whilst wearing a single red rose in your lapel.

Someone will come for you.

I think it would be nice to use a series of objects which were each wispy elements of fog. You could move them across the screen slowly infront of and behind the player.

You could even parallax them.

MNG is the format youre looking for.. though it has yet to gain widespread use.

As an aside GIF images are capable of full colour.. They are not limited to 256 colours.

As far as im aware the Ipod doesn't *need* any drivers. It's essentially just a portable hard drive and so falls under the general spec.

However to make it work as an ipod it requires the Ipod Service to be all running and working.

You need to install iTunes first. The Ipod service is required to recognise the ipod

hmmm.. You would need to put something in that, once the temperatures had equalised, would be colder than zero degrees.

So to entirely freeze a bucket of 10 litres of water you would need to remove about 1kJ of energy I think (MCdT)
so the object you put in would need to have at least 2kJ LESS thermal energy than the water.. which is nothing really.
(it takes about 3kJ to boil water)

As for the exact temperature and material i have no idea since i dont have the specific heat capacity of loads of materials available.

It's actually not possible to calculate the total thermal energy of a system since a 'perfect' gas doesnt exist. Any changes in temperature result in phase changes which screws everything up. Thats quantum physics for you.

I reckon a lump of anything cooled to about -50 and of equal mass to the water should do it easily. Assuming perfect conditions.

I havent formally introduced myself yet and, frankly, my game graphics are pissing me the hell off so i needed a distraction

I'm Steve from Nottingham, England. In my spare time i like to write and play music and play a fair few instruments now, including more esoteric ones like the ocarina and the penny whistle.

I also make pithy youtube videos on the subject of religion and politics.

I also paint miniture models of elves and goblins because i thought my geek cred wasnt quite high enough.

I'm a gamer but missed out the PS2/Xbox generation since i was a poor PC gamer and i used to just steal games from the video rental place and copy them and give them back... i dont do that anymore.

err..

now i own all three consoles but spend most of my time on the 360.. my PS3 has been the most expensive paperweight ever.

My 360 gamer tag is Squire James if anyones interested.. also 10 points for anyone who gets the Squire James reference.

I write a blog over at http://www.thethoughtradar.com and you'll find alot of my music up there too.

I think thats everything... i cant be arsed to read this back to see if ive made any grammatical fuck ups..

Heat has three methods of motion.

Conduction - which will not happen in a vacuum
Convection - which is due to varying densities, also not possible in space
and radiation - This is electro magnetic radiation which is how we get our heat from the sun.

The soup would cool down but very slowly...

As for the baseball; Air resistence is a fairly small force when considering something like a baseball. Even without air resistence you would need to apply about 5MJoules to the baseball. which is about 2.5 sticks of dynamite.

EDIT: actually now i think about it, im wrong about the soup.

The soup would freeze.

Conduction has quite a small effect on heat transfer. Most of the heat loss is done by radiation, which is still affected by differential temperature gradients.. therefore the soups days are numbered. since its like 3-4K in space.

Conduction in a gas is really quite small.. think about touching something metal which has been in a room for along time.. its still cold.
