I was getting a dark Italian vibe.
Also looks very late 70s/early 80s.
Presumably it's Dario Argento... doesn't look like any I've seen though - not enough saturated colors!
I'll guess Inferno.

Doom on whatever underpowered ancient system
Am I that predictable? :P
It's not Doom, although it is an ancient underpowered system, and the name of the game is four letters.

Based on the blurred title and the gameplay (since it looks like Tempest).
I have not seen the documentary (wrong)

Polybius?

And this doesn't require outside knowledge?
Seems like a world history quiz/puzzle crossover given the last line... ???
(I like the format!)

something about the phrase 'just joking and smiling' seemed a bit off and I knew the words must have been chosen for a reason other than their meaning as a sentence. That's what led me to find the solution.
Yes, that was the chink in the puzzle's armour for me too!
Now, let's have another!

Initially, I didn't get the riddle either...

I dare not reveal the answer for fear of angering the Mandle :)
Spoiler
The names Jane and Mike were not randomly chosen.
