If you wanna know which film, if that's so... Yes it is. (That's what it is.)

Shoop shoop shoop shoop shoop!

Quote from: Snarky on Wed 08/04/2020 10:38:37I vividly remember watching this in some after-school social club at around age twelve. Rewatched it recently, and it still holds up pretty well.

I was 16/17 and fell in love madly with Winona Ryder in this video. I don't know why I tried to convince myself for so many years after this that I was attracted to guys when my fate had so clearly been sealed then and there :-D

Give me a couple of hours and I'll post a new screenshot!

Lots of stuff to check out here, will try to make some time for it!

Shame on me for forgetting about Mark Sandman when were were talking about bassists. Morphine were one of the most peculiar bands of the "alternative" 90s era, consisting of just a two-stringed bass, drums and saxophone. Like so many others, Mr. Sandman left us too soon, after collapsing on-stage from a heart attack back in '99 :~(

Laura Hunt:
I think you confuse Jack's post with the first comic KyriakosCH posted, and I agree with what you say on Jack's post.

...you're absolutely right, I'm sorry. I literally hadn't even seen that one because I started reading from the most recent message upwards, and stopped when I got to Jack's message, thinking that was what you were talking about. And I agree completely, that one is just gross and not even funny. It's absolutely awful that you went through something like that and I wish more people would understand just how terrifying it can be to find yourself in a situation in which not even "calling the cops" will help you.

Sick loop!  :=

I'm sorry I'm not able to find that kind of jokes funny, as many women will attest it's not weather a guy is ugly that makes you afraid, it's weather he ignores your boundaries that makes women report him.

I speak from direct experience as I recently had to report a man to the police for stalking and harassment, and his appearace wasn't ugly in any kind of way, but his brehavior was.

So I ask that please, don't make jokes about how women only report creepy men because they look ugly, because real life predators come in all forms and it makes it much harder for their victims to be taken seriously.

Sorry if this comes across as off topic, but seeing that kind of joke greatly stressed me out.

Funny I didn't see them that way at all, but actually as a subversion of the usual doomer clichés and tropes. In the first one, the guy asks the girl out, she says "yes", and later we see him a lot happier, not a doomer anymore, without any stubble or bags under his eyes, and she's happier too. The way I see it, the twist lies in this simply being a happy ending, rather than the usual "she rejected me so I'm going to keep wallowing in my misery and they're all sluts anyway ugh". Even the last one, with the super cringy line "I have a d*ck" is basically the guy going "sure, fine with me" and them having a perfectly nice relationship together. I'd even go so far as to say it's... almost cute?

With this I don't want to dismiss what you saw in them or what you felt, maybe I'm the one being naive here! But it's what I personally took away from it :) (and by now you probably know me at least a bit and you know that I would have raged otherwise XD)

(Also, it's awkward to reply to this thread with this avatar, but I have my own reasons to use it.)

And the Tom Waits track reminds me of Napstering random tracks in college, which is how I ended up with the version of "The Piano Has Been Drinking" that will always be closest to my heart, very different from the usual one. For many years I had no idea where it came from:

Nice version! I don't think I had heard it before.

HIP HOP

I stumbled across this song, really love it! It was vaguely familiar and I didn't know why. Turns out it was in a Tony Hawks game!

El-P is a total boss! Company Flow's "Funcrusher Plus" is a cult classic, and his first solo album "Fantastic Damage" was absolutely groundbreaking in terms of production. I'm really happy that after all these years he's gaining the mainstream recognition he deserves with Run The Jewels.

ELECTRONIC ROCK
Loved these folks for years. This particular song stands out for me on my first album listen on their new works.

Fun fact, a friend and I organized their first concert ever in Madrid back in 2006, when they had just released Violet. It bombed SO hard and we lost SO much money. I never really liked their stuff, but after that, just reading their name triggers flashbacks in my brain :-D

A bassist (and artist) that I've been loving for the past few years now is Thundercat.  He does great solo work, and has played bass a lot with Flying Lotus.  Here's my favorite of his tracks:

Nice! Not quite my thing, but it was a really chill listen, thanks!

Charles Mingus, fantastic double bass player and composer:

Yesss Mingus is so great! I'm SO listening to these whole two hours right now.

The thing that's always been iconic to me about Tom Waits' sound is that xylophone or whatever it is he uses.

Marimba? Myth says he had one built out of bones for "Earth died screaming". No idea if it's true though :-D

Alright so long as we're in random town at the moment:

Awwww, this song never fails to melt my blackened metal heart <3

Anyway, here's Tom Waits banging some pipes:

WELL ACTUALLY the title is "The Prisoner" so I WIN (laugh)

I was updating my post as you replied. In some countries it was "The Prisoner Number 6" I believe, or referred to it that way at least. Hahaha, thank God I beat you. I would have been so bummed if I hadn't gotten one of my favorite shows!  :P

I... actually... *looks nervously to both sides to see if anybody's listening* have never watched it but those balls are so iconic that I recognized them immediately, the same way someone who's never watched Twin Peaks would probably recognize the Red Room... So it's fair that you got it first ;)

Again, just some from the top of my head.  I'll have to start keeping a nice list of tracks to post up here for more drum and bass love.
Moving away a bit from the Flea/Tool/Rush/Primus cliches...

Bell Witch don't have a guitar, it's just two guys playing bass and drums:

(Yes, that's a single 80-minute song. That's funeral doom for you. :-D)

Colin Marston is an absolute legend. Apart from being the mastermind behind Krallice, he's also an acclaimed producer and has been playing bass for Gorguts since their 2013 comeback, "Coloured Sands". You don't usually have the chance to clearly and distinctly hear the bass in death metal, but the production here is simply amazing:

Moving away from metal, you can't speak of best rock bass players without mentioning Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano:

I personally love Pascal Humbert's style, even though it's not at all flashy. The way he used to weave his bass lines around Jean-Yves Tola's drumming and anchor David Eugene Edward's chaotic guitar lines was just classy af:

Marc Ribot is the one who usually comes to mind of when you think of Tom Waits' classics, but nothing would be the same without Larry Taylor's bass:

And don't you dare say "bass guitar" without talking about Carol Kaye. She's recorded literally EVERYTHING in the world, including such obscure cult hits as:

and:

I guess this is the kind of stuff nobody else around here likes lol, but I can't stop listening to the new Ulcerate single. sO GOOD.
Heavy and slow.  Nice stuff.  Not as into this kind of stuff as I used to be, and never really got into metal with this kind of vocal, but the music is very good.  As far as stuff I'm into, it kind of reminds me of a combination of these two tracks, but slower, and less prog / more doom:

Yeah, "slow" is not usually what Ulcerate go for, but this track totally crushes. This is going to be one of my aoty when it comes out, for sure ;-D

Mastodon is one of those bands I feel I should like more, but they've never totally clicked with me. I like some songs here and there, but that's about it. And Meshuggah kind of bore me, hahah. I'm mostly into dissodeath/black and caverncore these days (yes, those genres exist, sorry I don't make the rules lol).

You are absolutely right.  Drummers do not get their due.  So, here are some prime tracks from bands with tremendously good drummers:

I'd argue that bass players are even less acknowledged. Any normie can listen to Tool or Soundgarden's Spoonman (great choices!) and go "oh man, dem drums are so awesome", but when was the last time you heard a non-music-nerd go "ah yes, such exquisite bass playing". That's right: never (laugh)

The real hero of tracks like these is the drummer. How in hell can they keep a double kick going that long?! (laugh)

I mean, that's pretty much standard for any extreme metal drummer, but what's amazing about this guy in particular is the sheer amount of stuff he's got going on at any given moment. Just look at this!

It's not the speed for me, it's the complexity... Like... he's not improvising. He's learned all that. He can remember all that. He can repeat it. The mind boggles.

(I once saw them live but the volume was too brutal to appreciate any of the fine detail. I tend to prefer to listen to bands like these at home and with headphones in order to be able to hear every single thing they're doing!)

A bunch of games free on itch.io: https://itch.io/games/on-sale

Any fellow AGSers? "Where the Water Tastes like Wine" and "Milkmaid of the Milky way" have been on the periphery of my radar before.

Oh, I totally missed this, sorry for the late reply. I've played a bit of Where The Water Tastes Like Wine because it totally looked like my type of game (narrative driven! Storytelling! American folk tales!), but I found it to be a huge disappointment. Apart from feeling extremely pretentious (and this is coming from someone who absolutely loves artsy fartsy stuff like Kentucky Route Zero or David Lynch or avant-garde music), the gameplay is just awful. Maybe the devs felt like they had to introduce more game-y stuff in order for it to not be a visual novel, but they did not quite manage to pull it off and the gameplay aspects actually get in the way of the storytelling and the flow. Big "eh, thanks but no" from me.

The toilet roll thing is absolutely ridiculous. Why specifically that? It’s an interesting phenomenon really. There’s probably some weird psychology behind it. My worry is that, if this is how people are behaving when the virus is only just starting to get going, what is it going to be like when the shit, indeed, does hit the fan?

People are hoarding all kinds of stuff: toilet paper, yes, but also frozen food, canned goods, desinfectant, etc. It's just that toilet paper makes for the most "omg wtf" headlines.
Sudden rush to buy things and chaos... That's part of the plan ;)

Ok, assuming you somehow still don't understand the concept. Let me reframe it, so maybe you can.

I stopped reading right here and I don't care what comes afterwards. Next time you might want to keep the condescendence in check if you want people to care about anything you might have to say.

That is the weirdest thing, to be honest. I often offer to Beta test if I have the time free, both for free and commercial games. I consider my "pay" the knowing that I helped making a game better and with less bugs, and if it's a commercial game, then I got to play a game I would likely not play, since in my current financial situation I can't afford the money.
But paying to be a beta tester?  8-0  8-0  8-0  8-0  8-0

Exactly! If you want to do it because it's your thing and you enjoy it and you get satisfaction (and maybe a game!) from it, all the more power to you! It's the "paying" part that's, to quote, 8-0  8-0  8-0  8-0  8-0 XD
