OK, I thought I'd try something a little different, and post a short clip instead of a still frame:

(This was also an excuse to learn how to make GIFs from a video. I've cropped it a little, BTW, so there'd be at least the pretense of a challenge.)

It's... OK, but not really in the same league as the comic. It's directed by Luc Besson, and he's added in some rather broad slapstick/scatological comedy, toned down the violence, and turned Adèle into a more conventional action-comedy heroine, so that many parts of the film seem targeted at kids in the 10-12 age range (though I would guess they would be bored by some of the other segments).

The best thing about it is Louise Bourgoin as Adèle, which is somewhat surprising since she was a model/weathergirl without real acting experience when she was cast.

The film is very loosely based on Adèle et la bête (the pterodactyl story) and Momies en folie (the one with the mummies).

Phew! You're right. Based on the comic by Tardi.

And the nudity may be slightly gratuitous (though it's a scene taken pretty much straight from the comic), but I think American-style gratuitous non-nudity â€" with L-shaped bed covers, coy camera angles and people who never take their clothes off during sex â€" is far more distracting. I wish we could go back to the seventies (or even early eighties), when mainstream movies would integrate nudity naturally, when appropriate.

Guess the rest of you don't watch the same movies I do. :~(

If you don't get it from this one it's safe to say you won't get it at all:

It's a wisdom of crowds thing. I haven't known any of the ones since my last turn (though I knew enough of the actors that I could work out "But I'm a Cheerleader" -- oh, and "Lost Highway"), but if you have a dozen people playing along, usually someone will know it. And then you have Tramponline, who knows nearly everything.

QuoteCould it be Martha Marcy May Marlene?
Yes ;-D  That was quick.

Yeah, the scene seemed vaguely familiar, and young women farming usually = cult, so there you go. Great movie. John Hawke and Elizabeth Olsen are excellent.

I think this one's pretty much a gimme, but I've been wrong before:

Yes, it's Ikiru ("To Live"), generally regarded as one of Kurosawa's greatest movies.
I think it was guessable in principle from the first picture, even for someone who only knew it by reputation, what with the two guys in the foreground (Kurosawa regulars) and the hat, but of course there's a lot of confusing detail to filter out...

And I know it's tempting to hint when you don't want to answer for whatever reason. I've done it myself. But â€" at least to me â€" it does usually come across as showing off, and a way to get the "credit" for knowing the film without having to take on the work of posting the next screencap.

Wait, how is Amores Perros part of a trilogy? 21 Grams and Babel are completely unrelated, are they not?

Howard the Duck may be a bad movie (I've never actually seen it), but I can very much recommend the novelization; written by Ellis Weiner, editor (at one time) of National Lampoon. It is really quite funny, though not as good as his Dune spoof, DOON.

And of course, Steve Gerber's original comic is a classic.

I was also getting a bunch of 403 errors about this time last week, particularly while browsing the Wiki (but which would then extend to any forum page as well). If I just waited half a minute they went away.

And this was with Firefox.
