Thanks Wyz. Once I figured out that "%04d" was a wildcard, that ffmpeg2theora worked. It doesn't seem to like my PNG files, though (colors go all wonky), but JPGs are fine (although it throws a ton of errors about "no JPEG data found in image").

VirtualDub only shows a short list of piss-poor codecs under "Compression". Do you know where I can get some better ones for MPEG-compression?

What's a good way to convert a series of images to a video, and which codec/file format should I use so it looks good in AGS (320x240)?

I'm currently using Photoshop's "image sequence | export to video", but none of the AGS-compatible formats look any good.

1. The iPhone lets you do video chat, and I'd guess some Android phones too. (I actually thought mine did, but I can't see an option for it in Skype.) Then you can be on a computer on the other end, and even record the video.

Sweet! Thanks Khris!

Cheers, ddq. Those all seem to be TTF fonts, though. I'd like a SCI font if possible. Also, I'd rather not have to evaluate hundreds of maybe-suitable replacements; it's quite tedious to import each one into AGS, setting the right outline options and then running the game to test how it look. I was hoping someone might be able to just say "Yes, this is a good LucasArts-y speech font with consistent character heights and outlining that you can use instead of the default AGS one."

I remember at some point someone criticized an AGS game (and AGS games in general) for using the default speech font, claiming it was ugly. And I agree, it's not a great font.

But which font should I use, then? Is there an obvious, superior substitute in roughly the same style? (Bitmap, not TTF.)

I only caught a portion of it on TV when I was a kid and it scared the crap out of me.

I am old.  :(

OK, let's leave off whether ProgZ's initial post was reasonable and temperate, and consider the use of green as a completent to pink skin color in art.

Then we could point out that pale skin often does look slightly green, especially in the transition from light to shade (you can see it in the original photo under the eyes, or by her cheek bone), and that painters have often used green shades to emphasize this effect, either subtly (1 - also has some good references joel might want to have a look at in general, 2, 3) or not-so-subtly (1, 2, 3).

Perhaps the attempt in Mad's and joelphilippage's edits isn't entirely successful, and you could argue that having abandoned the CGA-style palette of the first version, a lower saturation might work better. But as experimentation go, it strikes me as pretty tame, and an attempt to implement quite valid techniques.

A possible suggestion - would a 'beginner's guide' page, maybe listing 4-5 of the most accessible games, help ease people in and be welcomed? I'm thinking maybe:

Lunchtime of the Damned - first game, sets the tone of the series.
The Repossessor - Carries on a number of themes from the first game.
Purity of the Surf - fairly standalone but features a number of secondary characters and forms a good 'overview' of their relation to each other.
The First Stitch - First in the Tapestry series.
Cabbages and Kings - First in the Night of the Kittens series.

These particular ones would let people easily branch off into the other canon ones, ie the other Tapestry or Kitten games.

That's a great idea. RON is one of those things I've never felt up to tackling due to the amount of material (along with Love & Rockets and The History of Middle-Earth), but just having a shortlist like that makes me feel much more upbeat about the prospect.

Never heard of Quest for Orgy before, but I still found it in 0.21 seconds!

The morale of the story? If you can't find it, type the name into Google.Ã,  Easy!

That's not Quest for Orgy, that's just a teaser or demo or something. There was a full, real game made by Xierragames (LucasFan), but Vivendi made him take it down. Anyone who has it on their harddrive, feel free to send it to me (leave me a msg). I used to have the German version, which wasn't very helpful to me.
