I guess I'll sit this one out so it's not just back and forth. I had a suspicion after the third shot, and this last one confirmed it.

Instead I'll throw in the guess I had after the first shot; the intensely stupid Danish serial killer drama from Netflix, The Chestnut Man.

When people repeat jokes that have been run into the ground. In particular:

"I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you."
"Actually, it's only X if it's from the X region of France. Otherwise it's just sparkling [description of X]."

I liked it best when it was doing comedic satire, like Mark's "customer service script" in the first episode, or any scene with his brother-in-law, Ricken. All the sinister conspiracy shenanigans felt a bit rote to me. Like, of course the mysterious corporation is doing something nefarious. You don't even really need to know what it is, you just know they should be stopped.

Right you are, Danvzare! With Adam Scott and John Turturro (and even Christopher Walken):

Yeah, I also liked it a lot, though I felt the mystery aspect a little unnecessary and would have liked it fine as simply a dystopian satire. Very much recommended for fans of Squid Game or Black Mirror.

He's not, though. (But genre-wise this is the best guess so far.)

Let's have some faces (and backs of heads):

I don't suppose this will be very helpful, but I'd already screencapped it, so might as well add it:

I don't know what the programme is, but I'd really love to add some colour to those stark cold white rooms.

Something like this?

Supernatural?

No.

Stupot, I think the curry analogy doesn't quite work because horror movies as a genre, more or less by definition are about instilling some sort of fear in audiences. The fear may be more or less intense, but I think it's pretty clear that even if you don't find e.g. Hereditary particularly scary, it is meant to instill fear (and personally I found it "the right amount" of scary for my taste). Movies that don't even try to be scary (like many "horror comedies") aren't really horror movies. So in terms of curry, it would be more like getting annoyed at people who avoid it because they don't like sauce dishes than people who avoid it because it's too spicy.

All that aside, in the second prong of your argument you were clearly arguing that people should enjoy movies that are scary, not just non-scary "horror" movies.

We could debate it back and forth, but it isn't really to the point. Your grumpy peeve, or perhaps just the way you articulated it, triggered one of my grumpy peeves, and I stand by it. (I think I've expressed similar sentiments a number of times before on the forums, when people have insisted e.g. that non-adventure game fans are prejudiced, wrong or inferior for not enjoying the genre.)

Yes, Trust. Well done.

Both Adrienne Shelly and Martin Donovan starred in a number of Hal Hartley movies, and had their breakthroughs in them. This is the only one with both of them, though.

I am surprised nobody recognized Edie Falco, from The Sopranos and Nurse Jackie (and most recently as Hillary Clinton in American Crime Story).

OK then. Like cat, it grinds my gears when people cannot understand that an experience or sensation that is pleasant to them may not be pleasant to others, and attack them for it.

"It grinds my gears when people say they avoid spicy food, because first of all, a lot of so-called 'spicy' food isn't really all that spicy, and besides, what's so bad about a little burning in your mouth? That just means it's achieving its goal. They shouldn't be so childish! I don't have a problem with people who have food allergies or a medical condition, but 'too spicy' is a bad excuse."

"It grinds my gears when people say they don't go to clubs because they don't like loud music and crowds of people pressed tightly together, because not all clubs are like that, and anyway there's nothing wrong with feeling your body crushed by sweaty, dancing people: that's the fun of it! Get over yourself! The only people I can forgive are those who have experienced personal trauma like a mass panic where people were crushed to death, so that it triggers their PTSD. Anyone else has no excuse."

Those are bad takes. So is the one about scary movies.

Well that's a bad take.

No, much earlier than that. The movie came out in 1990, so the fashions reflect the time it was made, more or less.

You're on the right track. The female lead is indeed Adrienne Shelly, who later directed Waitress.

Well, the guy has had a pretty solid career as a character actor, usually playing slimy bureaucrats, cheating husbands and similar parts (he's an undercover HYDRA agent within SHIELD in Ant-Man, for example), kind of the opposite of his role in this film (which was his breakout).

The woman in the last two shots was one of the most prominent indie actresses of the era. She later transitioned into directing, making one fairly well-known movie, but was murdered before it came out.

The woman in the foreground of the second shot starred in a very high-profile TV show, which recently got a movie prequel.

Is anyone at least able to identify any of the actors? By role if not by name?

We had a pretty heated discussion about putting Larry Vales in the banner back in 2010, with lots of people against. The main person arguing for it was m0ds. Given that AGA couldn't even identify him at first (and also for me, I was about to correct him that it wasn't CJ, but then I couldn't remember the name of the character), I think it would be a good time to retire him.

I like the sketches, but I personally don't see the need to invent yet another AGS mascot when we have bluecup (wtf), and if we are doing character graphics I would rather see a selection of characters from classic AGS games, but that's just me. In any case I don't think it should be a prominent part of the site.

Now you pretty much have all elements of the movie, I don't think more screens are going to help. As a hint, the two actors seen here (one of whom died tragically) are well known for working with this particular director.
