I've ended up with all the Civ games, but the last one I played properly was Civ2. (And I was never particularly good at it.) If I were to play one now, which would you recommend?

Graphics-wise I'm fine with all of them.

After watching Broken Flowers, I got really into Ethiopian jazz through the Éthiopiques series. One of my favorites (who I suppose is more funk than jazz?) is Alemayehu Eshete:

That's Martine & Mirejam, an Oslo-based discopunk duo that were locally popular around the turn of the millennium. They put out one EP/single (what do you call a disc with three tracks?) and played a really fun set at the Øya Festival 2000 (among others, but that's where I heard them), before splitting up. The disc is on Tidal.

Edit: Turns out Mirejam Shala has continued recording in various other projects, including as part of Fox N' Wolf:

One of the most common newbie errors is to not link an event handler to an event property, so that the function never runs. (And honestly, not even just a newbie error, though more experienced AGS devs know how to fix it on our own.)

So I was thinking: why not do it for them? At compile time, for each event property that doesn't have an event handler set, check if the default function name (with the correct function signature) exists in the relevant script, and if so, automatically link it. (Probably with a warning in the output pane, or maybe even a popup dialog box.)

I really like that track, Babar. Nice!

It reminds me a little of this (for some reason the sound drops out two thirds of the way through, but you get the idea):

Throw pillows. Useless junk that make it impossible to actually use a bed or sofa for its intended purpose. The best you can do is just move them off whenever the furniture is in use, either taking up storage space somewhere or making a pile on a chair, or dropped on the floor (tracking dirt back into the bed/sofa when they're put back). They are the coronavirus of home decoration. If I see that someone has a bunch of throw pillows in their house, it instantly makes me think less of them.

I remember these guys. Catchy song, but the video is a full on tutorial of how to look like a complete 90's D-bag. (laugh)

Did someone say 90s douchebag?  8-)

I know the song through American Pie (I checked and that film wasn't released in Norway until December 1999 so there's a chance you didn't see it in the nineties)

I did see it, but probably not in December; it was a pretty busy month for me (military service, university entrance interview, probably visiting my family abroad for Christmas, millennium celebration...). So I'm technically correct! (TBKOC)

Yeah, that soundtrack didn't make any impression on me. I think the only contemporary song off there I was (already) listening to was "Celebrity Skin". I only came to appreciate "Flagpole Sitta" with Peep Show years later.

(Not sure if it's just the audio quality on the YouTube video that's bad or if the mixing was really that terrible)

Looks like members' display names are also affected by the character corruption.

1. Norway didn't have coffee shops in the 90's.

Yeah, I'm not sure we did, actually. The Starbucks trend had not arrived. As teens we would hang out by gas stations, and around places like kebab and fast food joints. (Well, personally I probably spent more time in scifi bookstores.) Some people had MTV (not sure whether UK or a distinct Scandinavian version), but not my house.

2. You fell through a wormhole and somehow missed Third Eye Blind's 34 minutes of intergalactic superfame.
3. You actually did hear it as often as the rest of us and were about to stab your eardrums with a pair of chopsticks when your brain snapped itself into selective amnesia.  (laugh)

In 1997 I was by choice listening to Skunk Anansi, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers… and looking at the charts, they were filled with "Candle in the Wind", Spice Girls, The Verve, White Town, Chumbawamba… It was the height of "Cool Britannia," and apart from the Friends theme I don't think American pop-rock made a huge impact over here at the time (there was a fair bit of US rap and R&B). Oh, I see Smashing Pumpkins did pretty well with their Batman track. I like that one.

I don't have any memory of Third Eye Blind from the nineties. I don't think I ever hear their musicâ€"or if I did, I didn't notice.

It looks like their nineties stuff never charted in Norway, and they're relatively unknown here (the band doesn't have a Norwegian Wikipedia page, for example). I only came to know their biggest hit as the intro song to the BlueCupTools podcast.

Isn't it about time for another Bluecuptools podcat?

I got a kick out of this scene because I'm fairly confident I've been to the place where they filmed it:

All right, can't be helped! From the hex code column it appears that the garbled character strings for all of these in fact contain an invisible character (which varies in all the à cases), which is what we should probably have used to do the search-replace. Well, live and learn, and â€" as you say â€" both Ã... and particularly à are probably quite rarely used on the AGS forums.

Thanks!
#678
That's bizarre and a little worrying, but it only appears to affect 22 posts, so as long as that's the only garbled string it's not too bad.

I'm more concerned that my Ã... has turned into Å  again.
#679
Cool! Let's hope I didn't make any mistakes in that table.  8-0

Although, this post appears to be… differently garbled than it was before.

Edit: And uh-oh. The entry that shows up as "Å " was supposed to be "Å ".

It seems like more or less every extended character (typographic, foreign letters, etc.) in every old post has been mangled. Is it not possible to fix this?

If you can give me examples of the mangled characters, and what they should be (i.e. "%$£ should be â,¬"), I can probably fix each instance.  Otherwise, I'm afraid not.

Check out the reference guide here:
