Short of reverse image search I don't know that there is cheating in this game. All right, one more screen and hints:

This film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival a few years ago. It was shortlisted for an Oscar for Best Foreign Movie. The director's previous film is being remade with Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (and to be directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash), under the title Downhill.

Does sir wish to hazard a guess as to the movie picture in question?

I would object that this film is in fact "mainstream-ish", in that it's a film anyone who watches mildly arthouse international films will probably at least have heard of. Maybe these screens will put an end to it?

(Kweepa got in right under the wire!)

Ha! no.

I felt a single frame didn't quite capture this scene, so here's a short clip:

(The top right corner looks a little off because I've edited out a station logo, just to avoid any sort of meta-spoiler)

I'm starting to think nobody has seen this movie...  :~(
You definitely should!

No? Maybe this will help...

I don't know whether it counts as a hint, exactly, but this is one of my top three favorite movies of the last decade (alongside Dogtooth and A Separation).

Thanks for the tips! While there haven't been any more guesses, here's another cap:

No, but what an interesting guess. What made you think that?

Neat-o! I haven't seen Leave No Trace yet â€" turns out I just missed it at the local arthouse. I liked Winter's Bone a lot, so I definitely want to see it at some point. (I also keep mixing up the title with Take Shelter, which sounds somewhat similar from a plot synopsis.)

Is it “all is lost”?

Well that was quick. Yes.

When I visited DC I was sort of amazed to find out how ugly the Watergate Hotel is.

Sort of linked to the last one:

This is up there with "Actually she's Melody Pond" in terms of quibbling.  ;)

I have a guess: The Inbetweeners?

That's the one. Compared to what manifest class remembered, it's basically an American film (though the main filmmakers are Norwegian: the director is Joachim Trier), it's not the father but the mother who commits suicide (and the movie starts a couple of years afterwards, though there are a lot of flashbacks), and she's a conflict photojournalist, not a movie producer.

I thought it was a little underwhelming, unfortunately. I can't quite put my finger on anything specifically wrong or not well done, but it never made me believe in the reality of what I was seeing: instead I was just watching Jesse Eisenberg, Gabriel Byrne, Amy Ryan, Isabelle Huppert, David Strathairn (too many famous actors! maybe that's part of the problem...) and Devin Druid moping around playing pretend.

It's not French, but the plot is similar enough to what you describe that you might just be mixing up some details. It was nominated for a bunch of awards at Cannes. Another couple of non-helpful/helpful caps:

Nope and nope.

Two caps for the price of one (since I don't think the first one will be very useful, but I just like the shot):
