Cool, thanks Stray. I'll try what you say. I'm okay with computers but Macs make me feel totally useless. Some things you just come to expect, like an uninstall option, a right mouse button and a key each for backspace and delete. Haha.

Anyway, nice to see you around man. Don't stray too far next time :-)

Mac users:
What's the safest way to uninstall a game from this Mac? They don't seem to have the dedicated uninstall feature that Windows PCs have. I've done a search online and a lot of folks say you can just drag it to the trash can, but I wouldn't dream of doing that in Windows if I could properly uninstall it.

Cheers.

Just an update on the Famicom situation. We got it working. Or should I say, it just started working, after we'd taken it back to the shop only for them to deny us a refund because it worked on their TV. So we got it back home, tried again and it worked straight away. It has gone blank again a few times while we've been playing it, leading us to conclude that the video cable is damaged or something. I'll buy a new one and hopefully that will sort it out once and for all :-)

Thanks for the ideas but it's still not working.
It's a real SNES (well, strictly it's a Super Famicom, as I'm in Japan).
It may well be the SNES but I bought it from Hard Off (a recycle shop in Japan and they said it was tested and working, which I want to believe for now. I don't want to take it back to the shop until I can at least eliminate all other factors).

I will buy an RF cable and try that instead. If it still doesn't work then it definitely is a broken SNES, but I really do think it's something else to do with the TV, for now. I think I will take it to work with me tomorrow and try it in the old tv they've got in the office. That will tell me once and for all if Ive bought a dud.

@Khris - The reason fort confusion over the word 'box' is this piece of advice from my friend over Facebook:

QuoteMaybe you need to plug into the console rather than the box?

Besides, I've got one end in the SNES and one end in the TV. What could he he talking about?

Re: what you said about the TV expecting analog input if it has RCA sockets. I would expect this too, but the sockets come under 'input 4' on my TV's list of possible inputs, and on the TV settings there is no way to change 'input 4' to analog, so I think this is the reason. The only mention of 'analog' on the whole setup is on 'input 5' which is just one socket.

I am going to buy an RF cable and try that instead. If that doesn't work then maybe the SNES is broken, but as things stand I just think it's in the TVs setup.

@Matt - I was a kid in the 80's so blowing into the cartridge is the first thing I tried.

Hmmmm, so you don't have sound either? That should at least work. You can even try plugging the RCA (tulip) plugs in a sound system; if it doesn't do anything there probably is something wrong with the box.
yeah, no sound either. You're the 2nd person to mention 'the box'. The first guy who said it I assumed meant 'the TV' but you're obviously talking about a different box. Perhaps this magic box is what ai am missing to make it work?

SNES/Super Famicom woes.

My girlfriend and I have just brought a top-of-the-line, new-fangled SNES-Box, but can't get it to work. I'm plugging the multi-out AV cables into their respective red, white and yellow slots on the TV, and choosing the correct input mode on the TV (and to make sure, I've tried it with all the other modes too) but nothing is showing. I've tried it on two TVs, both those relatively modern small LCD flat screen types, but no luck. Is there an extra step we need to do, maybe in the TV settings, or do we need a different kind of cable or a new older TV?

(And yes, the SNES is plugged in and turned on.)

Cheers.

As it happens, I've been thinking about the lead character in my next game. This conversation has inspired me to really think more about his background and motivations. As a result, I've actually managed to solve an issue about the basic storyline that had been bothering me. So by thinking properly about how my character fits into the world and, specially, why he gets to be in the role of protagonist and ultimately a hero, I've managed to make the story better and avoid some terrible clichés. So thanks :-)

I've said this before but I'm not really a fan of this obsession with choice in recent adventure games. I'm perfectly happy to play one story if that story is well-written and satisfying. If there are going to be choices then they need to be covert. I'd rather not realise I even had a choice until afterwards, when I'm seeing the consequences. Life is like that. It's full of choices, but rarely are they presented to us in such a contrived binary fashion. We just go about our lives, and even the little unnoticeable choices can cause our lives to take dramatic turns.

Despite having just said all that, my game Power Nap does actually have a choice which affects the end of the game, but you don't know it until you get to the end and are told which ending you got. The game is short enough that the player can try again for the other ending if they really want to, but once the player is aware that the particular choice gives you a particular path or ending, it's no longer worth having the choice at all, in my opinion.

I've noticed a few instances of games in the search results not displaying the blue-cup panel ratings despite having been rated by the panel.

For example, looking at Domithan's games, I Forgot, Living Nightmare Deluxe and Living Nightmare: Endless Dreams aren't showing any blue cups, but if you go to the individual game pages, they have indeed been panel rated.

[EDIT] Ahh, okay. I get it. They seem to be the same games which are marked as having broken downloads.
