Yeah, now that people have said life/humans/mankind etc, that seems to fit.  But that's not stopping me from trying to think of an alternative solution

Or it doesn;t actually have to be a trilogy really. Could just be a movie or a book and the riddle gives us the basic plot structure, and the 'THIS' which pays dearly is the title of the book/movie.

@Ascovel.  Oh, yeah. I ran it again and it sure does use DOSbox.  At least it does so automatically rather than the user having to fart about trying to get it to run.

Gabriel Knight is on GOG.com, so it works fine without DOSbox if you get it from there.
