My two cents.

For what is worth I also like the best character award, it helps to highlight games that have a specially charismatic characters.

But I wouldn't be able to tell if it is problematic for the voting, you know more. From my point of view both options sound good (popular voting as now, or restricting it to an award given by critics).

Regarding reducing the number of categories by merging some that intersect, I'm happy with it too.

Quote from: Danvzare on Mon 18/09/2023 18:52:30There's been an influx of indie games with a retro 3D look, which I'm all for and I really like.
But they almost all insist or using nearest-neighbour for the texture filtering, with the argument that it both looks better and is more fitting with the retro aesthetic.

I suppose if you grew up with a PS1 or a Sega Saturn, then sure. But if you grew up with a N64, PC, or played a bunch of arcade games, then you'll probably have a preference for bilinear texture filtering. I grew up with a fairly powerful PC, so for me, I grew up with basically all of the options set to max (and typically played the games at a resolution of 1024x768, which technically counts as HD from a vertical pixel count).

Interesting! I didn't even know texture filtering was a thing.

Same here, it was hard as they had different approaches. Long August felt more light hearted and very appealing visually and in character design, and overall well polished, but I finally went for the Distant door because the plot combined with the voice acting felt more emotional and unusual to me.
Well done both anyways.

@Blondbraid , if you don't mind me asking, how do you do the animations? Do you use Dragonbones?
Yes, you guessed right! Plus Firealpaca for art assets used in the animation.

Funnily enough, the reason I made a Renaissance vampire woman in a gown was so that I didn't have to do any tricky leg animations while testing out Dragonbones.

Thanks! I think the animations worked very well with AGS.  I tried to do some tests on Dragonbones a while ago, I may go back to it. Thanks for letting us know about Firealpaca, I didn't know it.

Good idea to simplify the model for the animation.

Hi SirLean,

You may want to try with the instruction "SayBackground", that would let the character talk while walks?

Ie, I'd expect the below to take your character to a place while talking:

Code: ags
player.SayBackground("Un libro... veré de qué se trata...");
player.walk(300,160,eNobBock);

The original picture is very nice. And I do like the "impresionist" parts of it.
In my opinion the fixes by ThreeOfFour are subtle but work very well and enhance them. Especially the shapes of the clouds.
Nice work

On first sight I don't see anything wrong either. As Nahuel said, it is possible that there is a forgotten closing brace somewhere above in the code; or a hidden character...

You mentioned you copy-pasted the code. I'd recommend you checking whether you pasted the trigger part of the function ("function hHtospot2_UseInv()"). I think I've had problems when I've manually written or overwritten some triggers instead of generating them from the properties in the editor. If this was the case, you might as well try to re-generate the trigger properly from the editor and just paste the function "content" inside the braces and see what happens.

Great articles, thanks for sharing.
I'm not a German reader, but the automatic translation is decent to figure out what is about.

Thanks for the tips gusys, interesting topic.

The reference to Alien Isolation reminded me to two videogame based books I've read, and that I've actually enjoyed quite a bit (although it has been like 20 years ago or so):

Day of the Dragon, based on Warcraft
https://wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Day_of_the_Dragon

Legacy of Blood, based on Diablo
https://www.amazon.com/Diablo-Legacy-Blood-Blizzard-Legends/dp/1945683015
I didn't really play Diablo, my sister did, so I cannot judge how close to the game's story it was, but I remember enjoying it.

That all sounds like an interesting plot for a videogame, best of luck.
The art style and the idea reminded me a bit to Isle of Dogs by Wes Anderson.
