The Night Falls
A Community Roleplaying Game

Rain falls heavy outside of your home, the drops hammering on the panes of glass through which you peer outside.
It is not quite night, but the hours of dusk are fading fast.
It's all a little hazy in your mind right now, but you know that you have to head outside soon, despite the deeply unpleasant weather conditions.

You've got something important to do. Something only you can do. Something you've done before, of course, so surely it won't be a big deal.

Just a job. A Mission.

You just need to get ready for it. The same way you always get ready on nights like this. A little ritual of sorts, to get yourself ready to head out there, into the weather.

(?) What ACTION will you take to prepare for the night that is about to fall?

- - - - - - - - - -

What's all this then? And how do I play?
Spoiler
This is the beginning of a community roleplaying game. All will make sense in time.
How do I play?

To enter a new command into the game, respond to this thread with a command formatted like the example below:

> Perform an impressive juggling display

or

> Offer the man a fine leather jacket

or

> Steal the lamp

A new command should be indicated with the > sign.

If you wish to upvote a command already given, simply post the same command again.

How will the game process commands entered?

Commands entered will be tallied and the most voted command will be executed in the game. If there is a tie, then the command given first will be executed.
For a command to be executed it needs to have at least one upvote, ie. a minimum of two players must agree on the command.

How often will the game update?

The game will be updated 2-3 times a week, depending on player activity and my availability due to work and social engagements.
Faster updates may be made early on to help the prologue get rolling.

Can I contribute?

Sure! If you wish to contribute art, characters, ideas or anything at all, feel free to PM me your suggestions.
I will not promise to include everything sent in, but I will consider all contributions and do what I can to include them where sensible.

Can this game be won? Or lost?
The mechanics of the game will be made apparent over time. It will be possible to eventually lose the game, as taking risky or dangerous actions carry a random chance of failure and consequence.
It is also possible to win the game, by completing The Mission.

What is the Mission? And who are we?
That is up to you, the players, to find out.

Good ol' Rammstein paid a visit to my city not long ago, and sparked some fresh interest in the band. We also had a retro LAN party with chiptune music, demoscene stuff etc.
Thus...

AUSLANDER!

Been getting into Sunless Skies for the past couple weeks and this little piece has been stuck in my head. Thus, I share:

I think that people (including myself) crash and burn with their MAGS projects simply because of greed. We want to make great games, we want to make the best we can, and when the 30 day deadline comes crashing down on you, it can get disheartening. Organizing a team to work on a game can be even more work than working solo on something smaller, so I don't really see teaming up as a solid solution here, either.
There isn't really anything concrete that can be done, apart from promoting MAGS more so people are aware of it, and making it clear that the games are not expected to be of top-notch quality or have ten hours of story and gameplay to them. If you can get people to grasp that a small, crude and not-entirely-finished project is a perfectly okay thing to release for MAGS, it might help people be more willing to experiment and put in the effort.

Personally I've looked at participating several times over the past couple years. A couple times I've been put off by the theme (I find themes that are too open to put me off, and personally prefer more restrictive rulesets), other times I have started something and then seen the project die due to simply not having the time and energy to put together a functioning game, which has been exasperated by a personal tendency towards feature creep in development.

I love MAGS, though, as it has helped me focus on some small projects that have taught me a ton about game development, scheduling and planning withing the scope of a project / deadline, so I'd love to see the competition go on and shine in the future. I just hope I can find a way to be a part of that, myself.

The Thing?

Nope. For the record, this game DOES have other environments than just snow, including deserts and swamps.
Also: It's a free game.

EDIT: I only now looked back on some of the earlier 150+ pages and noticed that the original idea of the thread was to showcase ADVENTURE games, though some previous games haven't exactly been that either. In any case, for fairness sake, I'll note that this game is NOT an adventure game.

Sorry.

It's not "Cold Place" or "Very Cold Place", nor is it Syberia.

Here, have 2 more screenshots, this time showing more than just icebergs:

I have an extra copy of Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes (the short prequel one) on my steam account.
If you want it, draw a picute of a lemur-girl (no specific style or size requirements) and send it to me via PM and the game is yours! Only one copy, so the first one gets it! I'll edit this post to notify when it has been claimed. ;)

psst: lemurs are awesome!

Awww, I didn' think anyone would remember! (so I crept into this thread to stare at it and repeatedly smash F5 just in case ;) )
Thanks Stupot+!

This time the game name is set, no changing the thread name every now and then. In the last game I hadn't even planned a full name that would describe the whole story (at the beginning it would have been a spoiler!), but this time it at least describes the setup and instead the players will be affecting the story in different ways. You'll see, I hope.

The old thread can be locked later today in my opinion, since the story of it is no longer developing. I'll add one more post to it, telling people they can PM me or find the new game in a new thread first.

I would like to request permission to start a new forum-game similiar to this one: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=44156.0

I've prepped enough material for a new game to get it started, and just like before, I'll make more up as I go. Hopefully we'll have as much fun, if not more, than in the last game. :)

The name of the game (and the thread) would be: "Afrika Korps - A community roleplaying adventure in 1942"

I can provide beta testing for games in real time.

What this means is that, if we can arrange a schedule and I am interested in your project, I can play a test version of your game while you are watching me do it and we can communicate via Skype as I play. This would allow you to actually SEE how I as a player respond to events in your game, you can get direct and instant feedback and suggestions and you can get an idea of how a player will interact with your game. I also have some experience as an AGS game developer myself, so I can give you some AGS related feedback as well, if you want.

I am offering this as a service as I have noticed that many developers (myself included) end up quite surprised with how players react to their games, and this sort of direct feedback might help many developers get more concrete feedback instead of nonpersonal written bug reports.

To get an idea of what sort of service this might be, check out my youtube channel where I have been playing some AGS games with the developers viewing the gameplay live. While these are not testing situations per-se, they should give you an idea of how this might work.

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1110C8238BA65D7F&feature=plcp

If you are interested, feel free to contact me either via PM or e-mail at wham@whamgames.com

My services are free for non-commercial AGS games, and with commercial projects we can discuss a small fee and/or other possible deals if you are interested.

I want to create my own font for my games.

Before you suggest I piss off and download the Radiant Font Editor, I have done so. However, I want to create a font that support scandic letters and some special letters: ä, ö, å, ü etc, and the Radiant Fonr Editor does not seem to be willing to cooperate with me on this.

Any further suggestions?
