Haggis, I've got this on again mate. I get the feeling this track spawned a thousand failed marriages. (laugh) I'm not crazy about the vocals, but the hook is quite catchy.

That track led me to this:

Oh I think it's called 'Drop Dead Gorgeous'? The one with Kirsten Dunst. It looked like a dumb teen flick when it came out, but is actually a really funny movie. (laugh)

I was with a mate of mine, a few years younger, walking around Ginza. We had to move several times because he kept hearing this highly-pitched noise that the rest of us couldn’t hear. I think officially they’re to deter rats but I’ve since heard that they also stop groups of teens hanging around in front of the upmarket shops.

I’ve also heard that they sometimes play a mosquito noise to stop homeless people sleeping in doorways, but I don’t know how true that is.

Related but unrelated ~ I thought this was a cool article about Japanese use of gestures and sounds to enhance the safety records of rail lines: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/pointing-and-calling-japan-trains

Here's something that grinds my gears.
Very high-pitched devices, used for scaring away cats or sometimes used in shops to "detract" youths.
Because I can hear those things, and they're nauseating!

What do they sound like?
Have you ever heard the high pitched squealing of an old tube television?
Just make it twenty times louder and have it rapidly turn on and off.

How could these not violate noise laws? That's crazy. I hope I never live around anyone with such little consideration for others.

Ohhh yes! I can relate so much  :-D Our neighboor has one of these torture devices and I get the feeling that cats don´t care about it at all. But I care! It has become a running gag in our family since we tried to talk to him about it and he said he can not hear it, so we shouldn´t too. He even upgraded it to something that makes a bright light when you get to close, but he had to take that down, because we were not the only ones bothered by it..

Jesus, how many unwanted cats do you guys have running around your area? I've never heard of these devices.

Yep he's bald enough. Haven't heard that Pixies song in ages. Random: I was once in a band that covered 'Hey' (not necessarily well, but we tried!)

I'm currently listening to this:

Just started, so far the first track is cool.

Yeah definitely nice ~ I'm also listening to a lot of synthwave/chiptune stuff (softly in the background) while I work from home.

How about a shout out to bald or balding singers:

BASIC:

10 PRINT "LEAD HORSE TO WATER"
20 GOTO 10
30 PRINT "MAKE IT DRINK"

(laugh)

At least someone got a laugh. And, I must admit that typing a few lines in BASIC really made me want to write a game in BASIC again. So many fond memories from the eighties.

I was actually halfway through writing "'Make it drink' won't be reached!" when I realised that was the joke. (laugh)

Yeah, I wrote a few basic games too, like text choose your own adventure type games etc. One other highlight was getting the source code for a Scorched Earth-type game where two apes throw bananas at each other (players in turn type the angle and velocity to try to hit each other). I remember tweaking the game in stupid little ways.

If you haven't seen it, you need to watch the music video (the guys who made it went on to direct the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie)

Yeah, actually I did just see the video recently for the first time. Adopting milk dude as an avatar for now.  :)

The real hero of tracks like these is the drummer. How in hell can they keep a double kick going that long?! (laugh)

I mean, that's pretty much standard for any extreme metal drummer, but what's amazing about this guy in particular is the sheer amount of stuff he's got going on at any given moment.

It's not the speed for me, it's the complexity... Like... he's not improvising. He's learned all that. He can remember all that. He can repeat it. The mind boggles.

(I once saw them live but the volume was too brutal to appreciate any of the fine detail. I tend to prefer to listen to bands like these at home and with headphones in order to be able to hear every single thing they're doing!)

That's unreal. You'd think for tracks that complex you'd actually need sheet music or something (a conductor? (laugh)) to keep everyone in the band aligned. I mean, that funeral doom track you shared must include some kind of sheet music or be improvised at times or something. Ca

The thing that's always been iconic to me about Tom Waits' sound is that xylophone or whatever it is he uses.

Dact, I've heard some cool randoms (at least randoms to me) play on that NPR Tiny Desk Concert.

Alright so long as we're in random town at the moment:

No correct answers yet.

Excuse the weird cropping on this next pic. The entire movie takes place in a single location, so it is kind of hard to find shots that don't just give it all away:
