Are you new to Internet Relay Chat (IRC) and eager to join the AGS IRC community? This guide is designed to help beginners understand IRC and how to get started.

What is IRC?

IRC is a collection of text-based internet chat rooms, allowing you to connect with people globally. It's a place for real-time conversations with individuals sharing similar interests.

Preliminary Checks

Before diving in, ensure that your network settings allow IRC access. Some strict firewalls or HTTP-only proxies might restrict IRC usage. It's advisable to consult your system administrator if you're unsure.

Getting Started with IRC

  1. Download an IRC Client

For Windows users, mIRC is a popular choice. Download and install it to begin.

  2. Setting Up Your Profile

Upon installation, you'll be prompted to enter your details. You can use a pseudonym instead of your real name and email. Choose a nickname that represents you on IRC – it helps if it's consistent with your forum username for easy recognition. There's also an 'Alternative' nickname option in case your primary choice is already in use.

    Set username

  3. Connecting to a Server

In the mIRC settings, navigate to the 'Servers' section and add a new server. After setting this up with below details, click "Connect to Server" to start your IRC journey.

    Set server

  4. Joining the AGS Channel

Once connected, type Join #AGS in the command line and press enter. This action will take you to the AGS channel where you can start chatting.

Understanding the Environment

  • Channel Operators

Identified by an '@' symbol, these are the moderators responsible for maintaining order in the channel.

  • Roger the Bot

A programmed bot that assists in managing the channel, including granting operator status and monitoring for abuse.

IRC Etiquette and Abbreviations

Familiarise yourself with common IRC abbreviations like BRB (Be Right Back), LOL (Laugh Out Loud), and IMHO (In My Humble Opinion). These abbreviations facilitate quicker and more efficient communication.

The #AGS Charter: Channel Rules

  1. Technical Queries

For technical questions related to scripting, use the forums instead of the IRC channel.

  2. Relevant Conversations

While off-topic discussions are allowed, avoid random rants or pointless chatter.

  3. No Flooding

Flooding, or sending numerous messages in a short span, is prohibited.

  4. Community Members Only

The channel is exclusively for AGS forum members interested in adventure games.

  5. Avoid Excessive Idling

If inactive for over 24 hours, you may be removed from the channel. Use "|away" in your nickname if you're away but logged in.

Handling Issues and Bans

If you face a ban and believe it's unjust, discuss it privately with the operator who imposed it. Only the operator who initiated the ban can remove it, but in their prolonged absence, you can request a review from another operator.

Becoming a Channel Operator

Operators are selected based on trust and long-term participation. Requests for operator status are not entertained; selections are made through appointments.

Quick Rules Recap

  • No technical questions – use the forums.
  • Avoid flooding and channel abuse.
  • Only for AGS forum members.
  • No excessive idling.
  • Address ban issues with the responsible operator.
  • Operator status is by appointment only.

This guide should help you navigate the exciting world of IRC and the AGS community. Enjoy your time connecting and chatting with fellow enthusiasts!
