The game takes you quickly in the middle of the story much in the style of a TV suspense series where the viewer is involved in the action with little time for all the details of the situation - left to be addressed in future episodes. According to the analogy, the game is a pilot episode with most of the main ingredients of the series. To judge this game one should not compare it with other productions that use the same "other world" or "investigating" theme. Rather one should look for those main ingredients. Perhaps the personality of the main character is the most well defined element of the project: Zack is self-restrained and considerate but he meets adventure with a detached come-what-may attitude. One could add the trademark detective qualities of focus and willingness to get his hands dirty. The episode-specific characters have a less explained behavior, dominated by emotions. They are in a mess and Zack is the clear mind that brings balance in their (after-)lives in the end. The story concentrates on the effect of paranormal activity on usual people's lives and this may distinguish the series among other games where the accent is on the main character and his adventures. The old house where all the action in the game takes place, and which proves to have secrets, is continuously in your attention through the music that describes its atmosphere. Sound is also there to mark events. The game uses animated portraits which help communicate the emotional dispositions of the characters. All images are based on photography altered with a slight blur effect which gives the impression of watching the events of the story through a window. How well do all these ingredients come together to create a memorable experience ? The answer depends in some measure on the next episodes. So play this first game and perhaps you may join us in a vote of confidence to the project of this new author.
Nice strong game, if a little on the short side.
The Lost Sonata: although short, has a great story line and I enjoyed playing it. Apart from a few minor points a very good first game and I look forward to more games from Sunny Penguin ;)
I liked this game except for the pixel hunting in some sections of the game.
